Peter walked down the street, smiling as he saw a group of small kids at the end of their walk talk excitedly to their parents. The parents smiled and took the kids down to the next house. He was getting closer to home and was enjoying the walk. It was Halloween night and all the kids were out trick-or-treating.
Sylar had gone all out for the night, decorating the house inside and out. He’d never seen someone so taken with Halloween before but he supposed it made sense; it was the holiday for boogeymen. Even reformed ones.
A group of teenagers went up their walk and he watched, seeing them ring the doorbell. Sudden screams had him jerking his head up more, starting to run. When loud laughter filled the air, he slowed down, confused. He’d thought…never mind what he’d thought, he was wrong apparently. The kids ran down the walk, babbling excitedly, talking about coming back later that night just to “see all the cool stuff.” He wondered just what Sylar had done to make them so thrilled.
Peter went up the walk, smiling softly at all the decorations around the house. It looked like a cemetery, with tombstones and cobwebs all over. Sylar had even put a few ghosts and goblins hiding behind the trees and there was a cauldron that glowed green and had smoke bubbling out of it. A devil was tacked to the door, his face looking benignly evil. Shaking his head, he went inside, hanging his jacket up.
The inside was even more decorated then the outside. Spiders and cobwebs filled the ceiling and there were intricately carved pumpkins everywhere. Peter looked closely at the pumpkins, wondering how Sylar had gotten such good detail on the devils, ghosts, black cats and haunted houses. He was pretty sure it was with telekineses, but he wasn’t going to ask.
Sylar really had gone all out this year and Peter had never seen him so happy. He watched as Sylar came around the corner, grinning at the detail he'd taken in his costume. Sylar’s hair was slicked back and he had on black dress pants, a white shirt and a black cape draped over his shoulders. Fake glow-in-the-dark vampire teeth were tucked into his pants pocket. Sylar could give Dracula a run for his money.
“Peter, you’re just in time. Can you help me with the apple bob? I’m going to put it outside for the younger kids.” Sylar asked, picking up a large tub of water by the door. Peter opened the door open for him, watching him set it down on a table next to the porch.
“Sure, I can help.” Peter hesitated a second before bringing up what was on his mind. “Hey, when I was coming up, I heard those teenagers scream and then run off laughing, what the heck did you do?” Peter grabbed the apples, taking them out to the tub and started setting them in the water.
“Huh? Oh! I just gave them a trick for their treat.” Sylar grinned, making sure the tub was sturdy and that the kids wouldn’t have any problems getting at it.
Peter stopped, looking at Sylar. “You do know they’re supposed to do the tricks to get the treats, right?”
Sylar nodded. “Yeah, but this is more fun. I’ll show you on the next group of kids.” Sylar walked back into the house, Peter following him.
Peter didn’t have to wait long. The doorbell rang and Sylar winked at him, slipping his teeth in. Peeking through the door, he backed up, letting the door swing slowly open using his telekinesis. Peter saw a bunch of 5-8 year olds, all staring opened mouthed at Sylar. He did look impressive at his full-height, arms outstretched with the cape flared out. Sylar wiggled his eyebrows at the kids.
“Good eeevening children of the night. How may I help you?” Sylar said, in a very bad Bela Lugosi voice. Peter tried to hide the snickers coming out of his mouth, but it was hard. Sylar really did look rather silly. The children gaped at Sylar before he swooped up the treat bowl. “Would you lovely children like a treat?” he asked, still using the Lugosi voice. That broke the spell, the children all calling out trick-or-treat and Sylar let them each grab a couple of candies. Grinning, he shut the door.
“Well, that’s not so bad. I think you impressed them.” Peter chuckled, watching Sylar take the fake teeth back out and tuck them into his pocket.
“I don’t want to scare the little ones, this is fun for them and I don’t want to give them nightmares,” Sylar shrugged, a sad look crossing his face before he shook his head. He picked up a bag of candy, pouring it into the bowl looking up as the doorbell rang again. Glancing through the peep-hole, he smirked. “Wanna see how I deal with the teenagers?” His mouth twisting into a devilish grin. Peter smiled, nodding his head. He was curious to see how the other man handled the older kids.
Sylar stood in the middle of the room, eyes closed for a moment. Peter gaped as fog started curling around Sylar, crawling up his legs to hide him from the knees down. Sylar’s body shimmered, changing slightly as Peter watched. His eyes became bright red, standing out in the darkened room, his face turning even paler then usual. Fangs inched their way down, overlapping his bottom lip, and a few drops of blood traveled from their tips down on to his chin. Music swelled from nowhere, eerie and haunting, wolves howling in the background. Peter shivered. This was getting a bit too realistic. Sylar winked at Peter, slamming the door open to the surprised cries of the kids outside.
“Who dares disturb my slumber?!” Sylar bellowed, sounding truly terrifying, causing the teenagers to gasp and the girls to grab the boys’ arms and hide their faces. “I’m very hungry and I see my dinner has come to me.” He laughed an evil sounding laugh and the kids squeaked in terror. There was a sudden swirl of fog that covered most of Sylar and then there was a ‘pop’ and a huge bat hovered in the other man’s spot, flapping its wings, eyes blazing. There were sudden terrified screams and instantly the lights brightened and Sylar stood there, grinning. The kids all let out identical sighs of relief before bursting into laughter and clapping. Shouts of “So cool man!”, “God, I wanna see that again!” and “Oh my effing god! Sweet!” were heard and Sylar held the bowl out, letting the kids take as much as they wanted.
“That was the sweetest, man. I’d love to know how you managed those,” one of the kids enthused as he grabbed his candy. Sylar just shrugged.
“Illusions and mirrors. Glad you guys had fun, be safe tonight,” he lied as he shut the door. Sylar set the bowl down, looking at Peter’s surprised and amused face. “What?”
“That…that was awesome!” Peter laughed. “They’re never going to forget that.”
Sylar ducked his head, blushing. “It wasn’t much. I figured I may as well put my powers to good use,” he said sheepishly. Peter walked over to him, putting his arms around his neck and leaning up, kissing him soundly on the mouth.
“Well, it’s great and I’m sure we’re going to be the talk of the town for weeks. You’re way too cute when you’re using your power like this,” Peter said, kissing Sylar again. Sylar smiled happily, hugging Peter close. This was going to be a great Halloween, but he was already planning on how to make it even better next year.

Date: 2008-11-03 04:10 am (UTC)By the way, besides absolutely adoring the story, I was intrigued by one sentence in particular: I'd like to learn more about that. It sounds like there is a particular memory that Sylar is thinking about, and I kind of want to know more about it.

Thanks for taking the time to comment on this, that really made my day. :D
